What to say when someone dies in Islam
The explanation behind the words, and what to avoid saying.
Muslim remembrance
Wording you can adapt and send today, grouped by who you are writing to. All of it is ordinary human condolence — where a message would depend on religious text, we say so rather than supplying wording we cannot attribute.
Name the person, say you are sorry, add one specific thing you remember about them, and offer one concrete practical thing you will actually do. Two or three sentences is enough — a short message sent today is worth far more than a considered one that never gets sent.
On religious wording. The customary Arabic phrases and du'a said after a death are marked review-required in this project and are not written out on this page. No single form of words is required of you, and nothing here should be read as a religious instruction. If you want to include an Arabic phrase, take it from your family or your imam rather than from a website.
Safe to send to almost anyone. Add the person's name.
I was so sorry to hear about your father. Thinking of you and your family.
There are no good words for this. I'm sorry, and I'm here.
Praying for you and your family, and for Amina.
I only heard today. I'm so sorry. Please pass my condolences to your mother.
A specific memory does more here than any phrasing.
Your mother was the first person to make me feel welcome in this family. I will not forget that. I'm so sorry.
I keep thinking about how your dad used to check on everyone before he sat down himself. I'm sorry for your loss.
Losing a parent changes the shape of everything. Take whatever time you need — I'll check in again in a few weeks.
Keep it brief and make the practical offer real.
I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. Please don't think about work — we have it covered.
My condolences to you and your family. If it helps, I can take your meetings this week.
Honesty is better than borrowed grief.
I didn't know your grandmother, but I know what she meant to you. I'm sorry.
I'm sorry for your loss. I hope you're surrounded by people who can look after you right now.
Often the message that is remembered most.
I know it's been a while. I've been thinking about your father, and about you. How are you actually doing?
It's a month today. I remembered, and I wanted you to know that.
Change the names, cut anything that is not true of you, and add the one detail only you could write. A message that is obviously copied reads as a formality; the same message with one real memory in it does not.
If you want the reasoning behind the wording rather than examples — what is customarily said, and what to avoid — read what to say when someone dies in Islam. If the family are beginning to gather photographs and stories, there is a method in preserving memories after death.
